Holy Matrimony

The Sacrament of Holy Matrimony is a vocation for a couple, just as the Sacred Priesthood is to the unmarried man. The institution of Marriage is constantly spoken about in Sacred Scripture. “The vocation to marriage is written in the very nature of man and woman as they came from the hand of the Creator.” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, No. 1603) Man and woman were created by God in His likeness. We are created out of love and are called, through the vocation of marriage, to love unconditionally, to create life, and to live life as husband and wife with an unbreakable union, even when threatened by discord and disorder.

This union or covenant, through the sacrament of Holy Matrimony, is one created by God himself. “From a valid marriage arises a bond between the spouses which by its very nature is perpetual and exclusive; furthermore, in a Christian marriage the spouses are strengthened and, as it were, consecrated for the duties and the dignity of their state by a special sacrament.” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, No. 1638) This sacrament shows the union between Christ and His Church and it gives graces to the spouses to love each other as Christ loves his Church, giving of themselves mutually and unconditionally to the other.
